Danish

by Leonard M Hawkes

I am Danish;
Grandma's great-grandma was Danish
(Though I admit, I've not thought much about it--
Being Danish in Northern Utah is like
Being Swiss, or English, or Welsh--most of us are):
Susannah Rasmussen from Copenhagen,
Her family settled down in San Pete Valley;
She some how ended up here and
Married to a very American Orson Hyde Pulsipher
Whose grandfather died
In the Battle of Bunker's Hill.

But still, I am Danish;
And today I fly her flag--red, with a white cross--
Much like the Swiss flag--not unlike the English
(Though certainly less complex).
And is there a relationship between that
Stark red and white, and
The same on our own "Stars and Bars"?
I suppose I must be a "true believer."
And for that very reason I fly her--
Yes, and undoubtedly fly her too
For the Prophet Muhammad.
