lightness

by Peter Humphreys

Suddenly
there was
a chill
in the
air

beside
the light
house
the mist
could be
seen
rolling
tumbling
pouring
a
white
fastness
down
Kilcommon Hill

from the sea
the fog
cloaked all
in a cold
stillness
the horn
sounded
all was
wet
seeping
dreary
blanketing
wetness

yet by
our hearth
the turf
sent tiny
sparks
out into
the bitter
night
you smiled
at me
at me
alone
from across
the room

O what
lightness
comes
with
true
happiness

Love brings us in from the cold, doesn't it? Enjoyed this very much, Peter. Those smiles are like a light in the window of our soul indicating that the heart is at home.

I can feel the cold, wet air of the sea and the fog of the Oregon coast - to the bone..... Your hearth is a wonderful haven. A fine poem.
