Topic: Banana Hammocks and Cheese Zebras

by Amanda J Cobb

You used to put cheese
on your animal crackers,
giving cheetahs and zebras
yellow spots and stripes,
and elephants jumbo cheddar ears,
walking them around your plate -
a menagerie brought to life
by Cheese-Wiz and
a 5-year old's stories.

I lay in my palm-strung haven,
suspended from the present,
cushioned in the memory
of little-girl fancies,
and try to remember the last time
I saw such pure happiness on your face.

Author's Note: Topic from A.J. Schuch, who is a punk and knows it. A bit too literal a translation of the topic, maybe....but the only other thing I could think of was an Ode to Yellow...and I don't like yellow that much.
