Simple Solutions

by Kristina Woodhill

Simple Sally, still aÂ’shakinÂ’
From the big catÂ’s drooling smile
Limping leg a grim reminder
Of the tigerÂ’s gnawing guile.

Luck was with our Simple Sally
Help came quickly - no fresh meat
Wounds are healing though her tortured
Mind keeps seeing razor teeth.

“Wow! This Sally, what a trooper!
She survived the cat’s attack.”
Said the Press Dude,“I must scoop her!
This tale my fame will put on track.”

Soon behind our Simple Sally
Trailed the Press Dude, pad in hand.
Queries, phone calls, ever probing,
Details wanted on demand.

“How did it feel, oh, Simple Sally?
What was it like to almost die?
Please, oh, please for all my readers,
Did you scream or merely cry?

What was it like to see your blood flow?
What was it like to feel the crunch?
What was your first thought as it dragged you?
Did you think you’d be its lunch?”

Simple Sal, big cat zoo keeper
Preyed on by cat and now by man
Just shook her head and simply smiled
While working out a simple plan.

“Press Dude, come with your recorder
So you can tape just how I feel.
IÂ’ll let you in on all the horror
I will tell all. It will be real.”

In SalÂ’s small office sat the Press Dude
His mind primed now for tales of gore.
Into her office SalÂ’s cat friend moved
Outside Sal closed and locked the door.

Author's Note: Our zoo had just completed a fine new Tiger area, acquired fine new tigers, and was giving a special tour. A gate had not been closed properly. One of the women was grabbed and almost lost a leg before being rescued. The rest is fiction, maybe....
