Contingency

by Nicole Assenza

play along my spine
some elaborate
ensemble of hands
fingering keys familiar
but never before
having laid this tender touch upon
uninvited
tapping stores of hallucinations there
still waiting to be delivered
but no more
I’ve already taken them from you
just as you’ve unlayered me
each one bringing tears
and epiphanies
like rainbows in the oil drop
many-splendored thoughts
of someone
more toxic than you
(are to yourself)
all of this
in the contingency of sleep
these dreams the next day
still stuck in your eye
embarrassingly clear
by your wandering mind
(embarrassing for you)
cool, blank, blue
I’m only amused by your
constant conundrums for me

"like rainbows in the oil drop many-splendored thoughts" I really love that image.
