Doris

by Kristina Woodhill

Every time I see another masterpiece you'Â’ve sewn
The quilts and tapestries that grace your home
I enter in your land of magic colourosity
Like Alice in a patterned world unknown.

No Melon Patch, no Corn and Beans grow on your garden walls
No Double Wedding Ring upon your bed
I look around for Turkey Tracks that lead to old Rail Fence
No New York Beauty dances through your halls.

Instead I traverse through your wondrous world of shapes and hues
Your fabric paintings dazzling and unique
Your wand that weaves your sewing spells delightful and sublime
That even makes the denims lose their blues

I swear I'Â’ve seen a heron drop its fish to pose for you
The calicos with Cheshire smiles recline
I know one duck gave up its quack to calmly land and nest
And corduroy cows give up their moos

Your fabrics line up eagerly, as side-by-side they play
They swirl in sweeps, in pleasing pleats they fold
The polka dots concede there'Â’s room for paisleys and for checks
And black and white admits to shades of gray.

I search each fabric painted scene with childish hope in mind
I look for gates with keys, or Drink Me signs
Some magic potionality to give me immortality
That I might slip within your worlds, your magical reality
And walk your paths of beauty for all time

Wow, what a lovely tribute. You really bring the reader into her world of creative fabrics.

Ditto what Tom said. Wonderful! and, "And black and white admits to shades of gray"...is brilliant. Just love this poem. Well, well, done.

The variety of imagery in this poem is wonderfully vivid. Fabrics, colors, animals and vegetables, I enjoyed reading this from beginning to end. I feel as though I know who Doris is without knowing who Doris is. JJ
