sunbather

by Mary Ellen Smith

freckled warm

sunny side up

she baths herself

stretched out,

unabashedly content

in the morning’s waves

of sunlight.

She is bemused

for a few moments

by a flirting butterfly

and then turns her head,

her luminous eyes

betraying the mischievousness

of her nature.

the boy across the fence

steals a glance

as boys are known to do

through a hole in the fence.

the smells of breakfast

fill the air

and she gets up slowly

slipping into the house

to beg for a just a bite.

good puppy.

Last line turned everything upside down. Woof. Love it.

Oh, did you have my imagination going! Only to be torn from my reverie by the warmth of the fuzzy one. The added dimension of the observer, well-framed by the fence. Clever and fun. Good one Mary Ellen.
