Grinning like an idiot

by Danielle Ernst

what would you have me do
short of tearing out my heart
rending the image of your smile out of my mind
blocking out your voice as I have done to so many other men
and I don't want you to be one of them
second glances, sideways looks
ambiguous smiles and lonely hands
are nothing to me
I can do without such a conditional love
I am much too worried about what I have now
to sit and mull over what I wish I could add to my life
I will give you a second glance and a third and fourth
and so on
and I will look straight at you
and I will smile wide and bold and tell everyone why
I am grinning like an idiot
and if my hand is lonely, I will hold it with my other hand
and find a kind selfish comfort in myself
I do not need a man to lead me into temptation
if anything
I might be the one leading him...

I love the image of the lonely hand coupling with the other, just as lonely.
