Triptych of Grey

by Melissa Arel

A thick grey settles
Suffocating the city
Low spirits, low hearts

Where are you sweet sun?
Yellow-orange rays flicker
Like a matchstick lit

Clouds drown out the light
Candles on the window pane
Give hope to the cold

You "painted" the fog with your words bringing me into your winter's day.

these images are gorgeous. each stanza can stand by itself, yet it works perfectly together.

I love the description of fog - almost palpable. S1 is wonderful. S3, last line, lends hope and optimism that the fog will dissipate. Beautiful way to close, a perfect endpoint.

You have tripled the fun with your poems Mel. Fun to read....Charlie

Understood all the way 'round. So perfectly expressed for a dreary day, when "hope" is the only candle one can light... and even then, there is a halo refelcted on the panes. I not only appreciate this, but, like I said, I understand it...

Mel, you have always been a painter of colors in your words whose equal here I've yet to meet. Now you've turned gray, of all things, into a rainbow and a beautiful thing...I am awed, but not surprised.
