December by Richard VinceIt is warm here, in the city,
Where the buildings huddle
Together, and traffic flows
Throughout like blood.
December is still in the
Countryside; it has not
Made it into town yet
To freeze the last remnants
Of a year's arboreal clothing.
The only clue to the time
Of year is the all too early
Dusk, leaving me with
Artificial light to guide me
As I head for home.
All those hours of darkness,
And the frantic mobs of
Ruthless shoppers, should be
Enough to make me want to
Hide away until next year.
But somehow, December is
To me all manner of
Pleasant things, like
Scarves and frosty grass and
Visible breath eloping with
The impatient wind.
I can think of no better
Way to end a year.

Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 12/29/05 at 07:22 PM Mr. Vince, this is simply one of the best poems I've read all year. Accessible and wonderful details. Amongst many excellent lines I find, "Visible breath eloping with
The impatient wind." to be just brilliant. A fav. and pick for potd. Thanks.

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 09/17/06 at 04:56 AM I enjoyed your various points of view on December. "th[ose] frantic mobs of/Ruthless shoppers..." sometimes start right after Labor day, yet you've added a calm and contrasting touch with the softer elements of the month. Congratulations on POTD!

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 09/18/06 at 01:38 AM This is such a fine promise of the next few months as the daylight hours are shortening and the leaves begin their change of wardrobe. I am skimming over the "ruthless shoppers" lines, ignoring what will come, and focusing on the "buildings huddle together" and Scarves and "frosty grass and
Visible breath eloping with
The impatient wind."
The last two lines are perfectly marvelous!!

Posted by Joan Serratelli on 09/22/06 at 02:18 PM I have never been a great fan of December, until this year. This piece is wonderful- it forced me to think of all the good things about December- not just the cold and the beginning of winter. Excellent write! |
