My Indian Princess

by Hartwell Davis

My Indian Princess walks the wood in the early morning hour
Just looking at the golden sun or to touch a tender flower
My Indian Princess seeks the place where crimson scenes unfold
Just to give it to the world on canvas framed in gold

With gentle hand she puts some gold upon a canvas bare
Adding red, green, a touch of blue,
placed gently here and there
With Indian eyes she sees the place
where crimson scenes unfold
And puts it on the canvas that she will frame in gold

The crimson scene so full of peace she saw out in the wood
Now upon the canvas is the place where the princess stood
And men shall come to the place of peace,
come all, both young and old
And view what was seen through Indian eyes,
but now is framed in gold

You may place it on your wall and enjoy the quiet serene
Though you never walked the wood to see that peaceful scene
My Indian Princess sought the place
where crimson scenes unfold
Just to give it to the world on canvas framed in gold.

This is lovely - the best so far of all your work I have read. Your use of rhyme feels effortless and unforced which makes it unobtrusive but firm. There is something haunting about the frame of gold which ends each verse - A sense of continuity which somehow continues beyond the end of the poem. Perhaps she is now herself 'framed in gold', an work of art created by the Creator? As you can see, I really really do like this poem!

You depict with your words the colours and wonder she paints with her brush. How beautiful this is! Thank you...m.a

A beautiful tribute to your Indian friend. I could close my eyes and see the peaceful scene she painted as she stood on the shore of a peaceful lake
