A Chance of Snow

by Mary Ellen Smith

She watched his smile melt away

That warm and sunny winter day

And tho the flurries came again

Twas not enough to make him grin.

Then came spring, summer and fall

And waiting patiently thru all

Till finally winter’s chill returned

The t.v. weatherman confirmed.

A chance of snow is what he said

With cloudy skies overhead.

The lows and highs confused her so

She only wanting to hear, “Snow”.

The wind came thru and did its chore

Stripped the trees of leaves and more

And kept she an ever watchful eye

For stormy skies that might come by.

From her closet’s secret place

She took from there her snowman’s face.

It looked a mess, a black coal pile

Even so to her, his smile.

She watched the evening weather news

Hoping she would get some clues

As to when the snow would fall

How much snow t’would be in all.

Then finally it was time for bed

She pulled her covers overhead

Prayed to God her soul to keep

And the winter wind wooed her to sleep.

Then thru the night the snowfall came

The weatherman was not to blame

A chance is all that he had thought

But more than that’s what winter brought.

That day she rolled the snow around

Until her snowman friend was found.

And then his smile and her big grin

Warmed their hearts from deep within.

And yes winter is a season so

We know that seasons come and go

But in between for just a while

There’s magic in a snowman’s smile.

Reading this brings back fond childhood memories of playing in the snow, making snowmen, and reading poems such as this. Thanks for the flashback Mary Ellen.

Wonderfully exhilerating with anticipation! (Of course, I've come south to avoid the snow. Seen enough in my lifetime! LOL!)
