Let's trade hats. finders*keepers

by Elizabeth Jill

Let's trade hats.
You go first.
What was it like
to be a child in Kabul?
I want to know
the secretest thing
you ever did.
Were you shy inside?
—did your curiosity
meet its match?
Is this the place you found
your lovely lifting laugh?

Oh, Child of Kabul, when
did you really really realize
that you were in-between two cultures?
Right then? —or later on? —or yet still?
I'm so positive that a deep part of you
lives forever there, else, how could you
bring Afghanistan to me?
I hardly know where
to find you sometimes,
this, even when
you are right
[write] here!

I hope you'll never run out of words,
I hope you'll pour your stories into me
forever and always again and again.
I hope you'll write a book
(and give the first copy to me!)

I want to wear your hat,
to feel what you feel,
as I laze so easy inside our friendship
and place your hat, tipping in its eloquence,
shading me like your one-of-a-kind leafy tree.
I might not give it back, you know,
it belongs where it belongs!
finders*keepers!

i loved this poem for the fact that you've done such a wonderful job of capturing the idea that a hat...which sits on top of the head & rests on the brain can take on the strong identity of one person. here you bring this person into the living room for us to meet them and at the same time carry on a fantastically real & delightful conversation with them. sharing cultures is so gorgeous...so well written.

Finders/keepers indeed. To think that so much can be found and shared under one brim... even bees in a bonnet ;] ;] ;]. (Couldn't resist...)

Fine tribute to a worthy kindred soul, and one of my favourite drinking buddies...at least spiritually. :o)

Indeed a wonderful tribute to one of my personal favorites... and what an interesting idea to play with - the exchange of roles and to be able to experience another's essence for a while. Excellent!

this is really creative. i wish i could have a friend with that much to offer. i feel like i'm so ignorant of other cultures.

now all i want to know is how this poem has never been POTD, and yet, the ones i see so often have nothing on this. you've got my vote, liz.
