breathing by Charlie Morgan
as i breathe the air dinosaurs exhaled
and morning breath expelled by socrates,
and charles manson, einstein, patchen,
carver, king, X, hitler, gandhi,
countless others.
so i exchange oxygenated lives
through the parts per centillion
of every respiratorial breath of
every specie who ever lived before me,
and
that breathes now, unified by
this ball of earth as its
core bubbles, gurgling forth
newer earth and yet-to-be societies.
and surely as tuesday follows monday,
i retain some of their life-force
and perpetuate their continuity.

Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 11/22/05 at 06:34 PM I like the way you incorporated the thinking of breathing the same air expelled by so many others, Chaz. Yes, "and surely as tuesday follows monday,
i retain some of their life-force
and perpetuate their continuity." ... these lines threw everything into perspective for me. I had to wrap my eyes around this poem several times in order to understand how you brought the past, present and future together into one ball and keep it rolling into eternity. Nice work!
