street corner signs

by Andrew S Adams

he stands, a penniless pauper in the grass
cardboard sign and knapsack
as i ride the bus by
the house of god and pass by
the flag for which he fought
and neither one now
is doing much helping out-
he holds his sign
his street-corner sign that says
he's got no money but god bless

when he was eighteen, he couldn't find a job
so he cut his loss and got into the army
says he did it for his country
or he did it for the money
or he did it for the love of what would come
he did it for his dreams
his ideology
but he did it for the gun

and he's got two guns now
one pointed from the front line
the other, hidden up his sleep
forever pointed at his mind

You want the truth? I think it needs a quick edit/polish, and that anything more would be likely to destroy the power of the slightly fragmented feel reflecting the fragmented values and life. This is pretty good for something you consider to only be a draft.

Ps - superb, double-edged title
