Turn the Table Against the Past by Ashok Sharda
Ever alluring is the past, a trap door
Laid by the LAWS
Latent, but ever present
Not letting us BE
How can one CHOOSE to BE
Being just an effect of our own past
The ever lengthening chain, known or unknown
Linking every effect, extending from the hidden past
Enacting every scene
Commandeering us to play a predetermined role
We proudly claim to be our doings?
Dumb stuck we walk, we may cry or laugh
As the scene eventuates based on the forces three
As the chain of the cause and effect goes on augmenting
Helpless, we keep on playing our role
Active or passive, depending on the reconciling force
How do 'I' stand against this relentless onslaught?
Can present ever be independent of the past?
Let's break all the chains, Love
As they extend to shackle us in the moment
Reinforcing their presence on the unknown path
Let us refuse to play the predetermined role
Let us become the ACTIVE cause
Creating new effects
Turn all our reactions into ACTIONS
Write our own past
Lets sew up our wounds in presence, Love
Leaving no scars to undo

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 11/03/05 at 05:46 PM As someone with his share of skeletons in the closet, I found this piece touching me deeply in mind and soul. I especially like the "call to arms" tone of the last two stanzas. To me, our best defence against the past is to keep writing good poems. |
Posted by Michelle Angelini on 11/03/05 at 10:08 PM Ashok, as usual, I'm dazzled by your philosophic brilliance. Yes, we are like chains - one moment of life flows into the next. These thoughts have occupied me from time to time. I know that even though I can't change the past, I sure can do something about unlinking the past from the future and changing it. Also, the "helpless" in the 3rd stanza, appears to reference many as believing they are victims, so that the leadership presented in the 4th stanza is a welcome invitation and realization that it doesn't have to be that way.
