an apartment (on the streets of stalingrad) by Joseff MaratOn the streets of Stalingrad
through the grey and rubbled halls
in an apartment there's a painting on the wall
dreamy images of Venice
through the streets the water curves
if Kafka had been here he would have put it into words
though the canvas overlayed in orange
a market can be seen and for an
instant you can glimpse some children playing
lovers gently kiss upon the cobbled alleyway
and two friends are smiling at a small cafe
yet what none of them can see
is the soldier looking sad
in a rubbled apartment
on the streets of Stalingrad
once someones home
on the streets of Stalingrad

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 10/05/05 at 07:01 PM Being well versed on the Second World War, including the battle of Stalingrad, I really enjoyed your poem. I especially like how you've captured and expressed beauty amid the destruction, as can often be seen in such a situation. Kudos! |
