Time for autumn

by Mary Ellen Smith

Time for autumn’s musty scent

The fallen leaves of summer spent.

Time that squirrels stop their play

To gather nuts throughout the day.

Time for muted sunshine clouds

Skies a wing with traveling crowds.

Time has come for pumpkin dishes

For kids to think of Christmas wishes

Time to wear a woolly sweater

Oh, cozy days are always better.

Time for hearts to be thanks giving

Happy for the life they’re living.

Time for raking with the rake

Up the gift that fall trees make.

Stop a moment they bid you please

Admire the colors of their leaves.

Beautiful reminder of things to come, wonderfully composed for all of us who hear the deciduous calling.
