Build Castles in the Air

by Kim Bennett

Dream on for the curiosity of children
Children of years that will never be counted
Erase the wrinkles of a smile and only witness timeless eyes,
Never blind to living,

Dream on and sternly grasp adventure to the heart
Proudly clutch a wooden sword and fight.
Slay pirates who pilfer the reality of fantasy.
Climb away from troubled seas and adulthood on branches of a sky reaching tree.

Dream on for all desires of humankind.
For fabrications of flying
Illusions of immortality
Visions of epic battles, always the hero.
For figments of perfection.

Dream on for delusions that keep us truly alive.
Strive with the heart so fiction becomes factual.
A foundation made of figments
To make living the way it should be.

Live the dreams we dream on to live.

Author's Note: I was watching Aerosmith and heard them say "Dream on" and I thought that would be a good first line of a poem. What to dream on about? Dreams. Too many people give up dreams when they get older. Even simple fantasies of climbing trees to the top, or pretending to be pirates and fighting with wooden swords. Then the fantasies become different, but still they are only fantasy. No. Life is hard only because people are convinced it has to be, not because it is. It reminded me of a quote by Henry David Thoreau. "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." If you have dreams, don't lose them. Build toward them.

The importance of the dreams we have in youth. An important read that leads us from our adult selves and reminds us of the beauty that once was. Great read.
