TWILIGHT (FOREVER)

by Terry Olynik

They danced
Their bitter tango.
Lethargy,
Not lust
The new caretaker.

He
Alcohol imbued,
Unapologetic.

She
Self-loathing,
Emotionless.

In the shadows,
With the crickets,
Death smiled.

Brilliant work. Says only what it has to, and in that...so much.

Somehow death always gets her way. The words you used create a melancholy tone. Hope may be here, hidden somewhere, but it can't easily be found because of an unwilling attitude. The mixture of crickets (usually thought of as cheerful) & death in the last stanza adds a dimension that maybe she (death) can be cheated.
