Predator’s Feast

by Maureen Glaude

Trampling amid
the deadfall
close behind
their dining shelter
after set-up,
the campers
discovered the
limb bone,
stripped bare
except for
one patch
of fawn fur-
still dappled.

Author's Note: Learning of this experience of my son and his bride, on our site, I suggested perhaps the First Nations people would have sent a prayer to one of their Gods, in tribute to the fallen fawn, or performed a ceremony? I wonder which God.

On the upside, you can be certain if the fawn was felled by natural predators, then it didn't go to waste.
