A REASONABLE MAN by Terry OlynikI am a reasonable man,
And can find no fault
In Count de Sade
(Or tiny black lines).
It is the demi-serpent-
The eclipser,
The venom-spitting Etruscan
Who arouses my emotions.
Fear in particular.
And regret.
To He/it, can be traced
Luxurious seedlings
(Of questionable service),
Dying rivers
And empty boxes.
I believe that one day,
When the air is firm,
I will visit this half-serpent.
On my bicycle perhaps.
I will say
"Won't you compromise
Dusty fellow?"
"Won't you compromise?" I will say.
And then pedal furiously
Through the burrs
And prickly-bush meadows
To guard my enclosures
(They're down by the river you know).
I shall cleanse my body
For the sacrifice to come.
Perhaps.
