Confused Affection: some thoughts on the subject of him

by Lacy D Phillips

Confused Affection:
some thoughts on the subject of him

I couldn't sleep for the need to quantify this thing
to name it and so banish my fear of its mystery.
Perhaps in the light of awareness I can turn it in my hands,
hold it an arm's length away during the days
and stuff it unceremoniously under a pillow come nights.

The electric blue that radiates from the well of you
charges the air all around, lends its thrill to accidental touch.

While I am satisfied (or have at least reached a peace)
with my body, I can't conceive of it being beauty
to the youth and experience merged within your form.
My one hope is that I’m on your mind in a flattering light
during the days and commotion to come,
though I dare not dream you would think of me
when the night calls to mind those desires of which we’ll never speak.

It is a gift to still see wonder in the world.
