There’s An Elephant in the Room.

by Mary Ellen Smith

Grandma says, “Let’s pretend an elephant has come to tea.”

But that is too much pretending for big girl Kate, cause she is three.

“And let’s pretend she has a silly purple hat with a floppy bloom.”

“Stop it Grandma!” Katie says, “There’s no elephant in the room!”

“Look!” says Grandma, “She has big earrings and a necklace too!”

Katie scowls, “I’m not pretending this with you!”

“I know.” Says Grandma with paper and pen,

“I’ll draw her for you. Maybe then.”

And Grandma drew Mrs. Elephant sitting there on her couch.

But serious Kate just crossed her arms and stood there like a grouch.

“Close your eyes really tight, now back and forth, shake your head.”

And reluctantly Kate obeyed and did just what her Grandma said.

Kate opened her eyes. “I see her!” She shouted, on her face a smile.

“I see the elephant in the room. She was right here all the while!”

So Kate made Mrs. Elephant a pretend cup of tea.

Yes, one for the elephant in the room then one for her and Grandma, me.

They had a lovely afternoon pretending this and that

And Kate had a little letter P that she stuck on the elephant’s hat.

“P is for purple!” Grandma clapped, approving of the addition.

“Now Kate, I’ll let you take her home with you but under one condition.”

“You have to promise me my dear, next time you come for tea

That you will bring Mrs. Elephant too, back here to visit me.”

Well everyone knows that an elephant won’t fit into a car.

So they thought of a plan to get her home, Kate didn’t live too far.

“She’ll have to ride up on the roof where she can hold on tight.”

And they giggled then to think of such a silly, funny sight.

After lots of hugs and kisses, her mom came and it was time to go,

“Back up.” Kate said to her mom. “You’ll step on her don’t you know?”

And Kate held the screen door open wide to let our big guest squeeze on by.

Kate’s mom smiled and gave Grandma knowing look, a winking eye.

Grandma just grinned as they drove off for home that night,

As she waved to Mrs. Elephant, on the rooftop holding tight.

This is beautiful Mary. What matters is the quality of impression that we transmit and register. And this piece does transmit positive impression.

A Grandma that has a tea party with an elephant who wears a purple hat ~ sure gets my vote. I bet Kate will never forget that memory ~ even if it may be faint when she is older. Love this Mary Ellen. :) Shon

Congratulations on your POTD, Mary Ellen. Well deserved! By the way, I'm still having trouble with this giraffe hanging around my house. :)

Call it imagination, dream or fantasy, I see yours is alive and well. And the fact that you share it with the world both in person and with pen is an inspiration.
That POTD crown looks good on you.

I think Kate will love that poem, have you shared it with her? The singing lines have that childlike rhyming satisfaction which mirrors your topic and although it flows quickly and cheerfully holding interest all along it is a big poem, like an elephant! I think her mom might have been told that same story by you, by the wink exchanged there. It is interesting how children, so famous for their imaginations, often have this skepticism-- and have to be won over by their more childlike, open minded grandmas. I've had the same experience. So I really identify with this! Once they are convinced they do play along with us well, although I find sometimes just to humor us! (hee hee)
