The Thing You Gotta Understand

by Amy Wustrin

The thing you gott understand
Bout me and Amanda is
We're sisters in a way
That sister's never are

We're family
Because we goddam say so
We've spent 81% of our lives together
And we'll make up that other 19
As we go along

In an alternate life
Where we'd never met
Our minds would surely have snapped by now
We are the gravity
The mysterious force holding
Each other's universe together

And surely, one day
In the Asylum Cafeteria
One of us would spot
The other under a chair

Or in a box
And conspire to meet in the padded room
To snort imaginary lines
And plan some long-shot escpare

She's like my hetero-life mate
That girl.
