How to Live Life (an assignment for my daughter's english class)

by Alison McKenzie

The right parents must be chosen
To achieve your heart's desire
Though my daughter won't believe
It's possible to pick your sire

And then you must remember
That you choose the path you tread
Don't be angry at the boulders
Don't begrudge the way you're fed

But rejoice in your experience
Yes, be glad for all you learn
For you've picked the way it's written
Yes, you pick the wood you burn

Don't forget about intentions
For they draw to you the rain
And your sorrow, and your laughter
All the lessons that you gain

So, it isn't what you're handed
No, instead, it's what you choose
And how the colors blend and sway,
The many different hues.

Author's Note: This is the parent's portion of an assignment given to my daughter. I thought she would hate it, but she said she loves it. Go figure.
