City (e)Scape

by Lacy D Phillips

Closing my eyes to keep my heart open to the city,
the sound of high fashion striking uneven pavement
stalks me step by step, skirting the steel girders.
To think of a wind from a thousand breaths united,
funneling down the canyon of Broadway
to make me mindful of the unbroken horizon
that I know must be just beyond this serrated skyline
spread like a toothy grin against the lip of the river.

Author's Note: Louisville, KY: I can still smell the scent of the pavement and recall the exact pattern of clouds in the sky existant at the very moment this poem came to me. I was heading down Broadway to 4th St on my lunchbreak, my shoes were blistering my heals and the heat and humidity were such that I decided food wasn't worth the walk and turned back to cool off in my office at The Courier Journal.
