Evolving Space by Uriel Tovarlight floods the city plain
drowning mendicants and crack heads
eating away at the crumbling buildings
and sweeping away empty candy wrappers
and beer bottles.
today will bring
new dreams to
youth--
dusk with its darkness
freezes ambition
giving birth to scum and bacteria
--the light dies away.
night enters mercilessly. 05/15/2005 Posted on 05/15/2005 Copyright © 2025 Uriel Tovar

Posted by Kyle Anne Kish on 05/16/05 at 12:19 AM Wow, Uriel ... I felt this poem so close to me while I read it ... well, I was kinda shocked. Your imagery is outstanding and it left me sad and confused when I finished. Then I read it again. Same reaction. You've done what a poet should do. Super.
Posted by Rula Shin on 05/16/05 at 03:14 AM Yes, the image is indeed intense, the evolution from the night's remains to day's hopes and back to the ominous falling of night is well done, the cycle does persist, "light floods the city plain drowning mendicants...dusk with its darkness freezes ambition" - there is an association we tend to have with light and its absence. Why is it the "crack heads...scum and bacteria" rise up in the darkness? Perhaps it's easier to maneuver, or easier to lose one's inhibitions...but the subjective truth? There is no difference. All the crack heads, all the scum, and all the bacteria of the world remain whether in night or day, societies diseases thriving on souls and not on dusks or dawns...as does HOPE for "new dreams to youth" remain in day or night - it is the perception that makes all the difference, and the ABSENCE or PRESENCE of our conscience that determines if darkness or light will eminate from within...a wonderful poem Uriel, very thought provoking.
Posted by Jeffrey Parren on 05/19/05 at 11:07 PM the world is reborn every day when the sun's light is first shown...night conceals even the most visible truths, you can be anything at night especially if you are not seen...maybe people are more human, their innate nature, when the light (truth) is hidden or gone...i really like the way this poem makes me feel, even if it isnt for the most positive reasons...good flow...i also agree with jack powers...less words might make it be that much better...great write! ~JPP
