in a strangely shaped building on an unusually rainy day.

by Andrew S Adams

there was a moment today where i was staring out the window,
it's one of those moments that occurs every once in a while.
okay
lets be honest,
it's roughly 90 percent of my life, but that's not the point.

while i'm caught in this pseudo-attentive stupor,
i notice a woman walking her dogs in the pouring rain.
this was one of those absurdly gray days, one of those where
it is frigid, and you can't really understand why the rain isn't turning in to snow
because you know that it's probably cold enough for it-
but this woman is seemingly oblivious. she doesn't seem to notice
the people rushing in search of shelter, or the
splattering raindrops hitting the street violently and cold-

her dogs notice it, they look at her as if begging to be
set free, because they are close to frozen and are
shivering like mad-
but she is just walking about, minding her business without a care in the world.

my attention is snapped back into the confines of the room,
where some vaguely important matter of something or other
involving that one thing that happened at some point in history
requires my attention and input on the matter
and when i haven't got any, it doesn't seem as if anyone could really give a damn one way or the other.

i turn once more to stare out the window, and
the sun is shining in the place of the dull rain, and this woman with her dogs
is nowhere to be seen.

i wonder aloud on this phenomenon, two realities colliding,
but i don't really give a damn one way or the other-
i could have just witnessed the most interesting thing in my lifetime-
and it was probably as mundane a moment as any that has ever existed.

oh well.
