The man who stole my smile

by Nikki Benson

You came into my life unannounced.
Captivated me with your words, disarmed me with your touch
Made me feel like you were the only person in the world
You gave me a dream
You gave me light at the end of a tunnel

Mimicking my mannerisms made me think perhaps you thought I was worth while
Turning down to music to her the melody of my voice
I wanted so to reach out to you
I wanted to pat your back when you coughed
Touch your hand when you were sad
Look into your eyes as you told me about your life

It was as if you were a gift from above
A reward for holding out
Feeling as if I could have found the person worth waiting for
I was so elated
Absent mindedly I drifted through euphoric days in disbelief
Don’t get your hopes up
You only met him one time
Waiting to hear if you felt anything close to what I was.

“This intrusion shall
now seeming sweet convert to bitterest gall.”
Never in a thousand years did I think those words written William Shakespeare
Would remind me of my evening
Low and behold the immortal words are true
When something seems too good to be true it is

Mr. Valentino’s moon is over someone else’s Parador
It’s as if someone has hit my switch and all of the euphoria and bewilderment
Has been channeled into pain, hostility, and angst
Constantly preying to God to lift my spirits is the only thing that has given me solace
The shadow of his smile has stolen mine
As the violent wind steels the calm of the sleeping trees

Thought provoking piece on a relationship gone sour. I really like how you titled this; drew me right in.
