Doesn't Anyone

by Jeffrey Parren

Doesn’t anyone write about
Butterflies
Excluding the picnic with the loved one
Including the wonderfully brilliant strips of color
Excluding the fact that the loved one caught it on their finger
Including how it transforms from an “icky” worm to a thing of beauty?

Doesn’t anyone write about
Stars
Simply because they are wondrous and hot
Not because you looked at them while making love
Simply because they magically make you wonder about the future
Not because they make you wonder about love and how it is “out of this world?”

Doesn’t anyone write about
Relationships
With themselves, how spiritually they connect with themselves
Without including a loved one as a source of power of “two as one”
With their souls, meditating and finding their own true meaning to the word self
Without mentioning how much all the pain was worth it? As if the pain was assumed?

Author's Note: I've just been reading a lot of love poems lately, and I am the farthest away from love I have ever been in my life...burned twice, shame on me. Now the folly is on all the future women, for I am charred remains of a romantic...

I've been scorched more than twice, but still won't give up on love. The last stanza says it all, because the most important relationship someone should have is with themself - get comfortable there first. Good work, Jeffrey. The images are excellent and I like the opposing lines.

Jeffrey, I don't want anyone to show up at my door with flowers or candy. They can just have their arms outstretched and a huge smile on their face. If they feel they MUST bring a gift of some sort .... SHOES ... size 6. Seriously though, being a hopeless romantic and being burned twice is all the more reason to move on and find yourself and someone who can love you as much as you love them. Love is miraculous and your poem shows many miracles among the charred remains. I enjoyed your poem a lot.

I love reading this. it's true that the moment you weave someone into a memory and then preserve that memory in a poem, you confine it to a finite place and time. sometimes it helps to see the beauty of the bigger picture... how the concepts of stars, butterflies, and relationships are beautiful in themselves, whether experienced with a loved one, vicariously, or individually.

Welcome aboard Jeffrey. Striking format (line formation). Sharp imagery with unusual take on common subjects.
