Spaghetti Dreams

by Mary Ellen Smith

One night as I lay down to sleep
Right after I had counted sheep
Full from the dinner I did eat
Spaghetti and a sauce with meat.

I drifted off quite nice I’d say
For it had been a busy day,
I had a dream then so confounding
I found it to be quite astounding.

Looking in the mirror, aghast
To find my tresses growing fast
On my head no longer hair,
It was spaghetti growing there!

The spaghetti grew before my eyes
Down my back and past my thighs.
It grew and grew and grew and grew
I didn’t know what I would do.

I wound it round my arms and then
I wound it round and round again.
From the kitchen I grabbed some bowls
To hold some of those pasta rolls.

I rolled it up in bowls and pans
As fast as I could use my hands.
Found the scissors from my sewing
If I cut it then would it stop growing?

I cut the spaghetti to no avail
And only left a pasta trail.
In my dream, it’s like I said
Spaghetti grew there from my head.

I wound it round the curtain rod
And yes of course it did look odd.
I cut a length and made a drape
A funny curtainy like shape.

I made a chair, a lamp, a vase
There was spaghetti every place.
This went on all through the night
From the dark until the light.

In the morning when I awoke
Before a word was even spoke
I ran my fingers through my hair
It was just a bad nightmare.

I checked the windows to be certain
There was no hanging pasta curtain.
I looked about from wall to wall
There was no spaghetti there at all.

Tonight for dinner I’ll have something plain
So this won’t happen once again
And I guess from now on I will take care
Not to dream about my hair.

Author's Note: My sister had a dream about this and so I embellished it a bit wrote this poem and did some artwork to go with it...she is Grandma Susie Clown and so the artwork is a crack up with her in her clown makeup with spaghetti for hair.

Some weird dreams often happen with me after eating a dish with lots of garlic. Very enjoyable and fun read, marvelously written!

I salivate in anticipation of the prospect of a 'plain' macaroni dream :)
