The Secret Vote

by David R Spellman

slithering
with serpentine tact
along hidden corridors
masked in anonymity
coiled to strike
with virtual fangs
and cyber poison
exuding a venom
with forked precision;
the stench of a breath
an exhausted death
filling each room to
which you have roamed

no library of works
no tome left alone
no single piece read –
yet your scales weighted
with unbalanced thought
mindless, sunken brains
misunderstanding the tell-
tale of tracks left bare
among the dust that clings
to the belly exposed upon
which you insipidly crawl
scraping it all the way

sadly even
when you shed that skin
you’ll likely remain the same...

hmmm..this one got me pondering. I like the last three lines especially.

Getting theological I would say this is Satan as he dealt with Man. The last three lines suggesting that changing skin does not change character. But the title has me buffaloed! Unless, it is Satan voting to destroy man unknown to man until Satan had tricked him into the Fall. You certainly describe a snake definitively in the first stanza and somehow humanize the whole scene in the second. Tying the two together in the last three lines.

I like this piece a lot, Dave, and my first impression, given the title, was the upper echelons of government that will do anything it takes to gain control and/or stay in office. The surprising thing is that they have the wool pulled over the eyes masses with either a willing or paid off media. Hope I'm right! Otherwise this is going to sound like an awful silly rant. The bottom line is: I LIKE IT cuz it slithers! pe4ce...

Initially I thought you might be describing a hacker, but then I figured you were talking about government snooping into the content of people's email, web searches, writings, etc. in the name of national security. Whatever your intended meaning was, the artfulness of this piece is that it elicits several ideas and meanings in its readers. Very well done, my friend. You are SOME KIND OF POET!
