Time Heals All Wounds (But What If They're Self-Inflicted?)

by Amy Wustrin

My heart
My Timex watch of a heart
Takes a licking
And insits that she "keep on ticking"

I decided she was making too much noise
So I tried to appease her
Shut her the fuck up
WIth cookie dough ice cream
But when all that did was make me fat
I added what I thought to be
A lethal dose of cynicism
To the next waffle cone I fed her

When the beating stopped
I celebrated
Cheerlessly, as you might have guessed
But I celebrated
Believing I had defeated
My strongest adversary
My well-meaning, hopeful heart
That always managed to betray me

I'm happy to report
That she was simply in a coma
She's building her strengh back up in ICU
And the doctors expect shell be strong enough
To strat betraying me again very soon

I, for one, can't wait till she's fully recovered.
I just hope she can forgive me
For trying to kill her.

Author's Note: It wasn't the drugs what nearly done her in. Nope. Drugs just aren't that powerful. Take a look around. It's *people* who share the blame. We are in control.

Amy, this poem touches me more than I can put into words. I put it on my favorites list. Yeah, I know the feelings (pain, frustration, disgust...) only too well. One suggestion - S5 - shell = she'll. I like the way you did the poem in 2 voices, because that's the way it is - 2 "people" fighting each other, it doesn't matter what the addiction, but as Michele mentioned - that's only what's on the outside. The internal emotions that are the ogres. Excellent work.
