Unspoken I Love Yous by Christel CrewsOn Christmas morn
She opened that small velvet box
And in her eye, a sparkle
That he could not ignore
She took them out, without a word
She knew it was more
Than he could afford
Yet she held it out, uncertain
He smiled and said,
Merry Christmas, my love
She was stunned and overwhelmed
In her palm lay diamonds
Two, one for each ear
He whispered, Wear them
And always think of me.
I knew it would surprise you.
She was still speechless
In complete and total shock
As a child she had dreamt
Of owning a pair, but he never knew
Her dream had come true
On this Christmas morn.
Years passed by and another
Ordinary day rolled in
He greeted her at the door
She was shining that night
Unlike other nights
It must be the diamonds
He thought. Yet she moved
With a spring in her step
Their lives would never be the same
That night, for her news brought
Laughter, shock and tears
She opened with a simple word
Baby is all he heard.
Eight months flew by in a flurry
And they rush out the door
For the time had come
A baby was being born
As he sped down the road
He looked over and saw
She had taken the time
To put those two diamonds on..
His dream was coming true
On this Christmas morn
Calendar years will not give
Justice to their life lived in
Love, yet their story is
Not different from many told
They raised a family, bought
A home, and watched as their
Life ran by. One day, not like
The many before came knocking
He had lived his life to the fullest
And with her at his side,
He accepted the doctors diagnosis
With tears streaming down her eyes
The days seemed dreary
His step was growing small
She brought his food on a tray
But always taking note to wear
Those silly tiny diamonds
He once gave her. He smiled
Whenever he saw, for it was
An unspoken promise
Of love, forever more
Their dreams had all come true
As she sat by his side, in those
Last hours, she prayed
That God would take his pain away
He smiled at her and whispered
Merry Christmas, my love
She held his hand as he
Sighed with a weak smile
He breathed his last
The last thing he saw
Before he stood before the Throne
Were two tiny diamonds
And a sparkle in her eyes
On certain mornings she was found
Sitting by a certain stone
Reading to him from books
They had frequented together
And she always was sure
To whisper I love you
In their unspoken words
Known only by them

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 01/24/05 at 05:56 AM Christel, it was hard to read this without my throat tightening and tears coming to my eyes. Beautiful. One suggestion, delete "two" from the last line. Don't know whether this is true or not, but it is an interesting story about love.
