500m (They're Trying to Kill Us)

by Jon-Jacob F Deal

We lay on our cots
Gazing up at the still-unfamiliar ceiling
Embroiled in the latest debate
Of our often opposed but equally glibly-explained philosophies
When, after a pause--
"You know," he began
"I was just thinking
Less than five hundred meters
Over that way"--he pointed
"Are people who want to kill us."
And, as if this was
(Quite naturally)
The most hilarious joke ever,
We laughed
Until
We
Cried.

This is perhaps the saddest poem I have read. If I believed in prayer, you'd have one from me.

I completely understand.

Brilliantly tragic, in how humour is sometimes mixed in to a situation to bring about relief, and more remarkably, how it sometimes works.
