Her diamond by Scott Cadence
She fell asleep in my arms on the couch
and it was easy to rest my eyes on her
It feels like ages since words didn't get in the way
it gets difficult to find that nook where we meet again unguarded -
Sometimes she is so solid I feel like she grips the earth
with both hands
when I invite the loss of gravity -
I have moments of wishing I was free, the different possibilities of life open and close like snaps of a jaw,
but I know these are fleeting and men are never really filled for too long with these foolish desires,
we eventually come back down and see why she clings
She lies here so seemingly satisfied
and my eyes fill soft with her
with red strands of hair framing her face,
delicate small hands
and the stone on her finger
And I finally realized the significance of a diamond
the symbolic meaning to lifelong relationships
How it's often rough for many reasons
but so rich with promise
and it takes years, days and nights of
loving, fighting, crying and laughing
that gradually refine it, cut it down into a prism
so that all the light gets entrapped in it
to brilliantly flicker in the corner of an eye,
it's always in the corner of the mind,
where memories pick back up
all the little things missed between busy schedules
and the expectations of the world,
our quiet details on the hush of a moments end
like how each wave withdraws from the shore
leaves the sand paint-stroke beautiful
Her diamond signifies the promise
we made to each other so long ago
and reminds us
to never forget
in love
