Pessum

by Karen Michelle

Do you know the
truth behind the
curve of my face?

Can you read
the storm brewing
under the calm
in my eyes?

Or are you drawn
into the simplicity
of a forced smile,
believing these pockets
to be brimming with
nonchalance and optimism?

I could close my eyes
and map the pattern
of the sun dancing
on your fingertips.

Holding my breath,
I could sing your thoughts,
keeping time with your
eager heartbeat.

And if your limbs faltered
and you were overcome by
the wave of disorientation,
I could slice the path home
by memory, through the night.

They say that lovers
should be evenly yoked -
but you are dancing
on the rooftops, darling
and I am dangling
by my fingertips.

Karen, this is the first of your poems I've read, but I will be sure to look for more. This is on my favorites list. I love the last stanza and the way you ended the poem.

Streamlined. Swims and leaps like a dolphin. Love it.

Very, very good Karen. I do agree with Stephan on the baby bit. It would be better without it...Charlie

I'm not familiar with the word Pessum but I take it to be a name: the addressee of this affectionate poem. Dancing metaphors, singing phraseology, an emotive close and ultimately Poem Of The Day.

Within the lyricism of the language and the love, I sense the "storm brewing", a passionate inner call to that shining one, the "darling" who "dances on the rooftops" to "see" how you are "dangling by my fingertips". The word "Pessum" as a title-- if taken in the latin meaning "pessum : to the ground, to the bottom, downward" highlights that precarious dangling... but there is so much beauty and light in this poem, that is not forced... so it is quite a balancing act!
