Sleep, Like An Absent Lover

by Amy Wustrin

Sleep, like an absent lover
I lie awake in bed at night
Longing for

Sleep, for which I scarcely have the time
And which has even less time for me

Sleep, I know I make it a chore
To spend time with me
I resist you, push you away
Even as i bid you
Come closer

Sleep, I've rolled you up in joints
And had a few laughs
And a few orgasms
Before bedtime
I've waited for you
And i would come
But you wouldn't

I've sought you out
At the bottom of every bottle of pills
And I hate pills
But I need you
God made it that way

Sleep, a flirty, charming gigilo
You have so many beds to lie in
With so many women more beautiful than I
It's no wonder that most nights
I'm left in the dark
Awake
Longing for you, Sleep
Like an absent lover.

Yes, just like an absent lover.
