adaptation (well-concealed habits).

by Andrew S Adams

and these empty arms are holding
ghosts- you've seen them, milling
around the parking lot, carelessly
crushing their cigarette butts, which
probably got them here in the first place-

every now and then, one
will come and embrace me, assure me
that there is life after death
(but it aint much to talk about).

the only moments we were alone,
there was a silent understanding
that this was going to be my only
recourse for what has happened;
i never understood the act, but
the ghosts assure me that this is
just a natural part of love,
and i am adapting accordingly.

and these empty arms are
holding ghosts- you've seen me,
haven't you? or have i been too careful
to crush my cigarettes in private,
away from the voyeuristic eyes that
seek me out?

perception changes moments,
and you are seeing something that
isnt there;
dont worry. i saw it too.
i assure you

this is just a natural part of love,
and you are adapting accordingly.
