Narrow Minded Head by Charles J HannanI found my head today
In the Earth
In the crust of humanity
Carefully, I brushed it off
So delicately
My mind was no longer there
Long gone with the Neanderthal
From the caves I dwelled
Learning to make tools
And feeding my family
Sheltering them from the outside world
The real, deadly world
And from the roots, a burst of power
Never before felt in my kind
We began with cooking
And healing and creating fire
We walked higher than ever before
A new form of communication
With language
All within the mind
That same mind
Which had long sense disappeared
In my head that I found today
Covered in Earth
And I wondered.......Who the heck put this here
Everyone knows we didn't evolve 11/09/2004 Posted on 11/09/2004 Copyright © 2025 Charles J Hannan

That last line is the most thought-provoking. It could be interpreted in two or three ways... and after all... that is part of the fun and the life of poetry. Well done. |
