he coughs and continues

by Emily Davidson

small talk and the sound of
gloves in pockets fills the air as we
sink our necks into our coats
and watch our conversation
float away in clouds of smoke
from our breath

and shifting away from me
he speaks to the snow and says,
"i can't do this anymore;
it's tearing me apart,"
he coughs, and continues,
"it was holding me back.
this was ruining me and i think...
i think i'm ready to move on."

something inside of me
died that day
but all i could do was look him in the eye
and nod

Such a great title ... plus, the way you incorporated it into the poem works beautifully. I think we've all been in those same shoes as some point(s) in our lives and can relate. Kyle Anne
