The Kicker in Me

by Rula Shin

I never saw the thin line
Nor even paused to glance
As I crossed over hurriedly
Into the known thicket of
A common widespread disease

The subjectively sane definition of
Insanity cries out to a rationale
That chooses to follow the paradigm
Pattern of beaten behaviors deluded
Hoping to unearth some heavenly beauty

You can try calling me here love
But donÂ’t expect to find a soul!

IÂ’ll be lurking in the shadows
I drew silently with my lonely finger
Lining the sand alone in time
Like opened curtains misled
Weeping to be drawn

Ah, but you called anyway!

How surprising moments can be when surprised!
Even shadowed drawings rise to life
When you meddle with your colored whispers
Smiling fiercely with your sharp eyes
Speaking clearly in my own voice
The dust settles in a great hush
The muted call of all beginnings

Now here lies the kicker dear
The kicker lies within meÂ…

This kicker has a strong ticker to be sure Rula. Evocative, enjoyable poem, so much so I read it three times in a row.

My favorite lines are "Smiling fiercely with your sharp eyes Speaking clearly in my own voice". It wasn't until here that I saw this might be about fantasy or daydreaming. I hope I am not way off.

‘how surprising moments can be when surprised!’, and surprised by the simplicity of being able to re-cross the line, the line we always fail to SEE, to ‘pause’, to apply and to evaluate the situation logically. Instead we hurry ‘on to cross into this known common disease’. Words too fail when habitually we follow the same beaten path, ‘hoping heaven’. But ‘the shadowed drawings come to life’ with this human interference in the form of these intense vibrations, positive and energetic, coming from within or from without in the form of a ‘conscious shock’’even shadowed drawings come to life’. These ‘love- kicks’ sounds so evolving, what ever the source.

Most individuals find it easy to psyhcoanalyze others but difficulty in finding their own true self. Some go kicking and screaming, but this is a transformational expose that goes beyond the facade we often hide behind, let alone project to the crowded mass in an effort to bolster a burgeoning ego.
