The Madonna by Richard PaezThe Madonna Oil on wood, artist unknown
Your pupil is so black it pulls. It is like the collapsed star— the singular engorged hollow of the big-bang about to flow.
Your pupil is so black it pools. It is like oil: soft-sticky viscous; like being under black-silk bed-sheets, like midnight tropical sea-water, like dew without dawn.
Your pupil is so black it disappears. It is swallowed by mottled-iris-mountains, an island surrounded by sclera-seas pouring endlessly over the edge of the world. 10/26/2004 Posted on 10/26/2004 Copyright © 2024 Richard Paez

Posted by Traci Mabats on 10/26/04 at 03:58 PM I was about to confuse Mona Lisa with Madonna. Personally, I like Mona better..she's sexier :) Nice tribute Richard. |

Posted by Betania Tesch on 10/26/04 at 07:56 PM mmmm I've been thinking a lot about religious icons lately and you've certainly captured some of the most intense feelings they bring about here...you're so gifted..I feel honored just to read...better, I feel moved. |
Posted by JD Clay on 10/27/04 at 01:24 PM This may be your finest effort to date, malachi. A trilogy of stark yet corelated realities. Your centralized focal point, depicts an entire universe beyond the unseen. Descriptive and impressive, as if viewed through the third eye of an artiste. It pulls, it pools, it pulsates. Pure poetry!
