I dare you to run

by Scott Cadence

I must have once been
Clearer
As if outside

There are reasons
I cannot quote a single black
or red word

Still time moves
It moves and breath is drawn
I draw it now –
both were given to me

Music and voices fill up the air
but you can hear the underlying tone
In-between gaps of intake
like a flat-lining that never stops

I’ve tried to cover it up
dub it with wavelengths of pleasure and pain
but it rises up from the heat
from the cold
It knows every condition of me

I am tied in to it in ways I am certain are boundless
The ripple of every action teeters in the balance around
and I can’t help but think
It’s all a sign

Building and building
till itself becomes the music
(everything else the static)
And breath is no longer for granted
But forgiven

All these years…
I have ignored him –

I have ignored him
for too long
