The Tree on Perron Street

by Jaydon Cole

Gnarled bark,
And twisted knots;
This is where we'll return.
Come through the rain
On Perron Street,
To hear the branches
Crack,
And watch the roots upturn.

Gnarled memories
In disarray,
I know again
You'll come this way;
Through the snow
On icy pavement,
Screaming for yesterday,
To watch the bark turn white
And winter skies turn gray.

Gnarled bodies
In frozen unity;
We'll meet again
Under shady leaves
To scrape our backs
On dry bark,
And let our
Branches interweave.

Gnarled emotion,
Cried testimonies,
As far as we can crawl;
To carve initials in
My pliable bark,
To reach for the heavens
For a glimpse of light,
To let our roots intertwine
And hold in ivy thrall.
