With That Look Of Nonchalance

by Chris Sorrenti

oh tell me something Mister searcher
what’s your joy in all this thing?
are you really a master of reality?
or just a tripper without his wings?

this a way that a way
your eyes go everywhere
like the owner of Boardwalk
in a game of Monopoly
though I can tell by your smile
it’s been a while
since you’ve won anything

was it your mother or your father?
who taught you how to play?
or maybe yourself?
though somehow didn’t realize
others had learned the game
and would challenge you
without warning
not letting on
they’d changed the rules
only to beat you
time and again
with that look of nonchalance

The first two stanzas seem very lyrical to me. I love the Monopoly image. An oldy but goody. :) Jordan

'yes, they’d changed the rules' even at the end of the game if needed.

This very lyrical poem can be understood on several levels I think. Personal experience will bring special significance to each reader. Exceptional writing.

some of us were never winners at Monopoly, and some would always win! To me, once all the properties were bought, the game became boring unless you wheeled and dealed a little. Chance was my favorite place, and we also put money outside the jail and built it up for jackpots if you landed at that spot. I am curious about who inspired this poem and what he was all about. As you were too, I see. Fun, well done.

Changing the rules...is that fair play I wonder? Ah those rule changing bastards! I like this piece very much Chris, quite sad actually. Reminds me a bit of Mara's most recent piece...there is something so very depressing about the notion that one day, perhaps, we shall all cease to understand or realize how to weather the storm, simply because they 'changed the boat' (paraphrasing Mara) - I don't look forward to that day when I lose my ability to change with the times, but somehow I feel that that day must come at some point or another, if only as a result of extreme old age haha ;-) Great write as always!

Culturally we play too many games and yet you hit an important point about learning what we learn from our parents. Great read.

Yeeowza! Tell it straight, Chris. Do these folks not fascinate you in how the heck they ever got to be the way they are? Great character exploration

I play poker on occasion and I hate when that happens!!! Though you can't change the rules too much in that game there is always the one who beats what you think HAS to be the best hand, and then just gives you that damned look... well done!

Also loved the "master of reality/tripper without wings" lines... [;0)~

Man, you were on the road to enlightenment twenty eight years ago. I like how you turn the screws of poetry just enough to keep the handle from braking off. Pe4ce...
