Old Expression by Maureen Glaude
I slid the empty cigarette pack
across the bar
to Dan, my server and friend.
'Chuck it, will you?
Just another dead soldier.'
He stared at me
his smile gone
his eyes grew black
I sipped my beer
'What'd you say?' he asked
I wondered what he might be getting at
'Oh, that old expression? I grew up with it.'
'Been to Europe?' he asked
'Sure, took a tour, back in...?'
'My grandfather lost five brothers there.
In one year. One war.'
A moment's silence
Dan looked down at his garbage pail
shook his head, tossed in the pack
and added
'Don't say it at the Legion'
