Black and White Photo

by Jane E Pearce

How I envy that young girl
in the black and white photo,
.
with a forever smile, so sure
her clean slate will hold
.
tomorrow's history, studded
with diamonds in settings of gold.
.
She stands there untouched,
only happy shadows dance
.
in a soft summer breeze
across her flat face.

She knows of no pain,
 ending up old, or death.
..
Lucky girl, tells the camera
that life will always be a hoot,
.
with Glen Miller's band
playing "String of Pearls"
.
under a full summer moon.
She never has to know,
.
in that thin world of film
on white Kodak paper,
.
that life can ambush, stab,
and steal diamonds in settings of gold.

Anne Frank was the first face and name that came to mind upon reading this. Evocative read Jane; so full of hope that can so easily be dashed.
