Open Casket

by Kenneth Lau

My arms drop from
Their crossed position
And grasp the mahogany before me
For my knees have
Given up the fight with gravity

Pale remembrances stare up at me
Lonely, starving for life
The twinkle of green
Sparkles no more...
Lids are closed forever
Which I would so love to open
Just once more
For the light inside

Where are you,
In that morbid river of Death?
No creature of such radiance
Is fit to swim among the skeletons
I can create a better afterlife for you

As I bend down to
Kiss thy face of everlasting beauty
Your Angel whispers promises to me
To rescue you before
The closing of the final lid

I pass my own sorrows over
To the growing strength within
The security the Angel has given me
As his rich red lips twitch
Telling you that it'll be alright

Your air will be sweeter
Your grass greener, than ever before
Summer aromas which jump out everywhere
To flood your nostrils

THUD!

Reality, all around
Keep a bed in the meadows for me, will you?
It is so lonely here without you.

Quite a different view of grief and the process it entails. I like the last stanza so much, since it's like asking someone to wait at the Rainbow Bridge. ooops, mist fills my eyes when I think of the people & animals who will wait for me there. Wonderful poem!

Interesting poem, especially love the dark humor at the end.

One of the most poignant poems I've read by Pathetic poets. Great work.

Wow, I really like the feel to this poem. Very different perspective of death.
